New Treatment Options For Nail Fungus

Dr. Silvers with Advanced Foot and Ankle and McKinney Foot and Ankle Center in McKinney, Texas has been treating toenail fungal infections for over 11 years while in private practice. "Toenail fungus treatment options have advanced over the years," states Dr. Silvers. "Options today include topical solutions such as Penlac Nail Lacquer, a prescription medication, oral medications such as Lamisil and Sporonox, numerous over the counter medications and most recently, Laser Treatment of the Nail fungus." Dr. Silvers points out that historically oral medications have been most effective but there is a new topical medication called Formula 3 in which studies have shown that this topical is as effective as the oral medications. Formula 3 can be purchased at Advanced Foot and Ankle and McKinney Foot and Ankle Center and is not sold in stores. Oral medications have proven to be effective but there are risks. Dr. Silvers informs his patients that a blood test to check liver function is required prior to starting the oral medication to treat the nail fungus. He states that the oral medications are typically well tolerated. Some studies have shown an increased risk of ingrown toenails after taking the oral Lamisil medications. "In my practice I see about a 3% incidence of ingrown toenails as a result of oral antifungal therapy," states Dr. Silvers.
The latest method of treating toenail fungus is with a laser that kills the fungus in the nail plate. An initial study using the PathoLase laser consisted of 19 patients which did show favorable outcomes after 90 days. "In my opinion, this is another viable treatment option for the treatment of nail fungus. At the present time this laser treatment is not covered by insurance and treatment costs range from $600 to $1000 per treatment and there are no guarantees of a total cure," states Dr. Silvers. He feels that toenail plate removal with topical treatment of the nail bed and the toenail as it grows back is just as affective and much less costly.

McKinney Foot Doctor Discussed Fungal Toenail Infections

Fungal Nails are caused by an infection that occurs underneath the surface of your nails. Sometimes the infection can penetrate inside your nails. In both cases they can be quite painful and impede your ability to walk or run. The fungus can cause the nail to become discolored, misshapen, and malodorous. Sometimes we can prescribe oral or topical medication and remove the diseased nail portions through a process known as debridement. In other cases we can surgically remove the infected nail and eliminate the fungus completely. This can allow a new healthy nail to grow.
Formula 3 Topical Antifungal

Formula 3 is an anti-fungal topical treatment for toenail fungus. Formula 3 is a blend of all natural oils which will not irritate the skin or build up on the nail and does not require removal. This product requires very little maintenance and it is easy to apply. It is odorless and does not stain. The patient applies the product to the affected nail and massages it into the nail plate. Apply Formula 3 twice daily; morning and evening. The natural oils in the product will prevent splitting and cracking of the nails. Studies have shown that this topical product is as affective as oral medication in eliminating nail fungus from the nail plate(s).
